The loop-rot mangrove shown to improve blood glucose and lipid profile in diabetic patients


Diabetes mellitus is one the leading causes of death worldwide. Researchers are working towards finding potent antidiabetic agents that can be used for treatment. A study, conducted by researchers from Annamalai University, has revealed that the loop-rot mangrove (Rhizophora mucronata) has potential use in diabetes treatment. This finding, which was published in Herbal Medicine: Open Access, made use of in vivo experiments to determine the effect of loop-rot mangrove leaf extracts on diabetic rats.

  • Five percent of people around the world have been diagnosed with diabetes mellitus.
  • Previous studies have shown that loop-rot mangrove contains different phytochemicals that can be contributed to its different medicinal properties. These properties include hypoglycemic, antioxidant, anti-cancer, anti-nociceptive, antiplasmodial, and anti-HIV properties.
  • Phytochemicals present in the extracts were determined.
  • Animal models used for this experiment were male Wistar rats induced with either Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes.
  • Effects of the extracts on diabetic rats were determined based on sugar, total cholesterol, triglyceride, and lipoprotein cholesterol levels in the serum.

Results of the study showed that the loop-rot mangrove can effectively improve diabetes by serving as an anti-hyperglycemic and antihyperlipidemic agent in both types of diabetes. This activity of loop-rot mangrove can be attributed to the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, and terpenoids in the extracts.
